Evaporative cooling
In the Arizona desert in the 1920s, people would often sleep outside in screened in sleeping porches during the summer. On hot nights, bed sheets or blankets would be soaked in water and hung inside the screens. Electric fans were used to pull the air through the wet sheets to cool the room.
That concept was used to make the evaporative coolers we know today. An evaporative cooler produces cooling by a natural evaporation process, water evaporation, with a simple air movement system. Fresh outside air is pulled through wet pads and then cooled by evaporation and circulated through the house by a large blower. this can lower temperatures as much as 30 degrees.
